Mona's Real Estate Matters and a Myriad of Other Conversations

The Veterinarian Will Make a House Call Tuesday

Traditionally, mornings have always been my time to work on this blog.  I honestly love it. Sitting by the huge deck windows, looking out over the morning mountain views and sipping tea or coffee.  When I recently entered back into the ActiveRain community, I wouldn't say it was like riding a bike but it was like moving back into a familiar and favorite neighborhood.  Life takes odd twists all the time though and over the last few weeks I've slipped back into another familiar though not favorite role, that of a canine geriatric and hospice worker.  Mornings are precious and lately they've been given over to taking care of Gigi, Wiggles and SilverBear.  While the time of departure still isn't clear for Wiggles and SilverBear, our veterinarian will make a house call for Gigi on Tuesday morning.  It's probably past time to end Gigi's pain and misery, but we always find it hard to let them go.

Gigi is one of a litter of 11 American Black and Tan Coonhounds mixed with some obviously handsome unknown rascal.  The puppies were born of a stray we rescued, all were huge and beautiful.  Gigi started out as "Chunky Gal", named after a local hiking trail and also...let's face it, she was a chunky baby.  It didn't take long though for her to morph into her new name, G.G. for Gorgeous Gal and then later into Gigi.

Gigi has had a couple of really hard three or four years.  We thought we'd lose her a couple of times on the surgeon's table, first for a torn (lack of medical term here) something to do with how the food moves from the mouth to the stomach and then a year later, Gigi got bloat (twisted stomach) and back to the surgeon.  Maybe a year ago, during a routine visit the vet discovered a tumor in her mouth which has steadily grown in the past year.  She's done pretty well up until the last month and eating is now of no interest to her, she's probably lost 20 pounds and is weak and sad.  She would have been 15 years old this coming January.

I hope the weather is beautiful.

The biggest, fluffiest, clean blanket will get laid out on the deck in Gigi's favorite spot and when the vet comes on Tuesday, the last thing Gigi will know is that we love her and hope beyond hope that her transition is from old, sick and weak into a healthy and strapping young dog again in her spirit world.
