Let's be clear, my spice cabinet wasn't quite like this. For one thing, I have three times as many spices and a larger shelf. Actually, they were even alphabetized on little elevated shelves. Still though, pretty much every time I reached for something on the back elevated shelf, something would tumble on the first two layers. Frustrating, very frustrating.
Not half as frustrating though as searching for the right spice rack that would fit well on the door to the pantry. Finally though, when we went to look at a house for a friend who was on the fence about whether to sell or not...there it was! The perfect organizing system for spices. She had hundreds of spices all beautifully organized on Elfa racks that she'd gotten from The Container Store.
A few months later I knocked something else over and decided it was now or never to order the racks. They aren't inexpensive and I was hoping for a sale. My friend said they had one sale a year and it was usually a significant savings. This was on a Saturday and at first I thought I'd wait until Monday to call and see what time of year their sale was but then I remembered I was part of the internet generation. I forget sometimes. It is all about timing. The BIG Container Store sale was that weekend! 40% off. You can't imagine how happy I was. A few hours later after lots of measurements and re-measurements as well as playing with the sites interactive rack planner, I placed the order.
The rack system arrived in perfect order except that the directions for placing the molly bolts into the hollow core door were simply a series of photos on a 4x5 piece of paper. Even enlarging these photos onto an 8.5x11 sheet didn't help. Yes, we had to call tech support for installation assistance!
Leslie had everything installed in about half an hour and it is going to be perfect. This morning my favorite coffee is perking and I'm getting ready to tear into the pantry to reorganize everything.
I just posted to my blog the other day about not putting off changes and improvements to your house until you are ready to sell, I'm taking my own advice even though it will be decades before the selling decision is made. I want to start enjoying the order in the pantry now!
Coffee will definitely help. Creating order from chaos in the kitchen is on the agenda today and I can't wait to put those two former spice shelves to more productive use. Maybe tomorrow's post will have photos of the new and improved pantry!
